The unique science forum in Oxford
The Cafe Scientifique is a successful UK community originally imported from France.
Cafes Scientifiques are public forums in which scientific issues are discussed informally, involving scientists and non-scientists alike, aiming to inform, to entertain, and to provoke debate.
The links on the left of this page give more information.
Dr Carolyn Willis on investigating the remarkable phenomenon of dogs who can detect bladder cancer by sniffing urine: how it was discovered, developed and ongoing work to create a new diagnostic instrument based on the research.
The date: Tuesday 10th June 2008
All welcome, no scientific background required. Visit the FAQ page for more information if you have never been to a Cafe event before.
Next month: Tuesday 8th July "Exploring the planets: why bother?", Professor Fred Taylor. Is there any point exploring the rest of our solar system, and how do we go about it? Note that we take a break in August of each year.
Visiting the Cafe: Hosts Caffe Nero in the first-floor cafe of Blackwells Main Bookshop are still the providers of all things caffeine and snack-related. We open the doors to the Cafe Scientifique at 6:30pm (possibly earlier in cold weather) and Caffe Nero will serve drinks until the brief break at around 7:30pm. Audience members may still bring their own wine or beer, no corkage charged: bottle-opener and glasses provided. Two bottles of 'emergency wine' are on tap for those who don't bring their own, but when they have gone, that's it. Previously-ordered books may be paid for at the time via a member of the bookshop staff, but please do ask the customer services department to leave the books at the front desk on the ground floor, clearly labelled for you, otherwise they will be locked away by Customer Services.
